Don't Be Fooled

"Free Range" hens must still be housed and their eggs sold as "Barn". We have to place stickers over the words "Free Range" but somehow the supermarkets do not have to do this. Don't be fooled, their "Free Range" are actually "Barn" from hens that are not "free to roam"

If there's and egg in the house

Never forget that if there's an egg in the house, there's a meal in the house.

Free Range Eggs change to Barn Eggs

 IMPORTANT CUSTOMER INFORMATION

From March 21st our free-range eggs will no longer be classed as ‘Free Range’ but as ‘Barn’ eggs. This is due to the Bird Flu housing order issued by DEFRA last November having exceeded 16 weeks.
The derogation, which covers the whole of England, has now expired so we must comply with marketing rules and regulations and market our eggs as ‘Barn’.
This means that we will continue to sell the eggs from our supplier in our existing pre-packs, but the number on the eggs will change from 1UK to 2UK, this indicates they are ‘barn’ and not ‘free-range’. A temporary label will be placed on the outside of each box.
Caterers will need to amend any reference to Free Range Eggs on their menus.
Our suppliers hens will not be allowed to range freely in the fields until DEFRA are satisfied that the disease is no longer a threat in the UK.
We fully support the efforts to keep the hens safe and free from Bird Flu and assure you that all free range producers must follow these new guidelines.
We hope that you keep supporting us by buying both our traditional Colony Eggs and our Free Range eggs during this difficult time.

Egg Prices

Unfortunately due to unprecedented price increases, especially our poultry feed, it has been necessary to increase our wholesale egg prices. Retailers may or may not reflect these increases.

Poultry feed is now at its highest ever price and packaging, especially cardboard and pulp has also seen major price increase. The increase in online shopping has increased the use of cardboard creating a shortage.

We continue to feed our hens with the highest quality food rather than use a lower, less expensive, feed. We will not compromise on the quality of our eggs.

The plastic prepacks that we were using have met with considerable buyer resistance forcing us to resort to a stock design fibre box. The fact that the plastic prepack was made from recycled plastic and was itself recyclable with our own label was not enough to persuade the public to buy Broadland Eggs.

We will have our original boxes back by the end of June. This problem has been caused by the continuing shortage of packaging.
